项祖英,一九二六年七月十一日生于苏州的音乐世家,一九九九年十二月八日病逝于上海,其父项印石为苏州吴平音乐团创办人,熟谙江南丝竹与广东音乐,项祖英自幼习二胡于父亲,又师承张季让、陆修棠及蒋风之先生,还兼学扬琴、秦琴、京胡、小提琴等,一九四六年,任吴平音乐团理事兼国乐队队长,自学研究吕文成的整套粤胡曲目,一九四九年,毕业于苏州东吴大学。一九五六年,应聘为上海民族乐团艺委会委员、乐队首席及独奏演员,后在该团学馆、上海音乐学院、上海师范大学、上海戏曲学校等处任教。编有《吴平国乐曲集》、《二胡乐曲选集》及《怎样拉好二胡》等。创编二胡曲有《梆子风》、《点苍山下》及《阳关三叠》等。著有《陆修棠及其二胡艺术》、《国乐宗师,辉煌业绩——纪念刘天华逝世五十周年》及《对〈二泉映月〉的理解与演奏》文章等。

XIANG Zu-ying

 XIANG Zu-ying was born on July 11, 1926 in Suzhou, Zhejiang province and passed away of illness on December 8, 1999 in Shanghai. His father was a musician of Jiangnan Sizhu and Guangdong music and founded the Wu Ping Music Society. Since his childhood, he learned the erhu from his father and further studied it under ZHANG Ji-rang, LU Xiu-tang and JIANG Feng-zhi. In 1946, he was appointed as the manager and leader of the Wu Ping Music Society. He learned the full set of gaohu pieces of LU Wen-cheng by himself. In 1949, he graduated from the Dong Wu University of Suzhou. In 1956, he was appointed as the art committee, leader and soloist of the Shanghai Traditional Orchestra and later taught in the training department of the orchestra, the Shanghai Conservatory, the Shanghai Drama School, etc. He authored the books Traditional Music of Wu Ping, Erhu Music Collection and How to Perform Erhu, etc. He composed and arranged erhu pieces Bangzi Style Music, Under the Mountain Diancang and Parting at Yangguan, etc. He also wrote many articles and published in various magazines.
