FENG Shao-xian<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n FENG Shao-xian was born in December 1939 in Hailun, Heilongjiang province. In 1953, he was admitted to the Hailun Opera Theatre of Heilongjiang as a student learning the yueqin<\/em> and percussion of Ping opera accompaniment. In 1957, he was admitted to the Song and Dance Troupe of Harbin learning the erhu<\/em> and also being a member of the ensemble attached to it. In 1958, the troupe changed the name to Song and Dance Theatre of Harbin. He then further studied the erhu<\/em> under ZHANG Ji-rang and also studied the pipa<\/em> under LI Ting-song. In 1959, he started to reform the yueqin<\/em> of Beijing Opera by adding freds and strings to make it to a chromatic scale instrument. In the same year, he composed the yueqin<\/em> solo piece Fisherman Song of the Songhua River<\/em> together with CAO Da-cang. Later on, he composed many other yueqin<\/em> pieces himself. In 1960, he became the principal of the ensemble of the theatre.
