In that era, some intellectuals were promoting a reform in various systems in the country, which influenced YAN Lao-lie deeply. However, in fear of persecution, he could not openly show up his zealous support, so he borrowed names from popular instrumental pieces and altered them a bit to secretly suggest his perception of current affairs. For example, Chain in Chain <\/em>: people had to be united together; Spring Is Coming<\/em> : the bad old days were going to end; Dry Thunder<\/em> : the revolution was near; and Descending Curtain<\/em> : the corrupted Qing Empress ruling behind the curtain was going to be overthrown. These works were instrumental pieces without words; no word was used directly to criticize the ruler, but the emotions were expressed in the abstract musical form. In fact, the support for revolution was strong in the heart of people in Guangdong during that time, but nobody dared to speak openly. However, Chinese people overseas could speak openly. In 1905, a song with words promoting revolution was published in Japan.
