In 1934, Wang Yi-jun was working in the EMI Chinese Orchestra of the EMI Record company. In 1935, after completing some recording, he accidentally created a very nice melody and his friend gave it a name – “The Flowers Blossom in the Full Moon”. This is a light music that describes the joyful gathering of people in celebrations.<\/p>

This piece for Chinese orchestra was composed in 1959 based on folk music from Zhejiang Province. It consists of 4 sections.<\/p>

  1. The Ocean at Dawn: On the background of quiet harmony provided by the strings, the quid plays a beautiful introduction in free tempo. Then comes an allegretto melody played by the orchestra, which presents before us the morning scene of a fishing harbour.<\/li>
  2. Fishing at Sea: The cantabile theme is sometimes lively and sometimes lyrical, which conveys the delightful mood of the fishermen. The sharp sound of the wind instruments and the forceful answer from the orchestra depicts the scene of the fishermen puling the net.<\/li>
  3. Victory over the Storm: Imitated sounds of the stormy sea with a firm rhythmic pattern creates a frightening atmosphere against the simple but brave tune of the ishermen.<\/li>
  4. Joyful Return: Melodies from the 1st section reappears with variations. The joyful sound of<\/li><\/ol>

    the whole orchestra depicts the scene of the fishermen coming back with bountiful yield.<\/p>

    Moonlight over the River in Spring originated from an ancient pipa solo Xiao and Drums at Dusk. The available earliest score could be dated back to 1895 from the album of WU Wan-qing of Wuxi. LI Fangyuan further developed the piece in 1875 and collected it in his New Score of Pipa by changing the name into Xunyang Pipa. The composition was further modified by WANG Yu-ting who changed the title into The Moon over Xunyang. In 1925,developments were made to the music by LIU Yaozhang and ZHENG Guan-wen in Shanghai. The piece then became an ensemble and was given the title Moonlight over the River in Spring. However, the contents and conception remain the same<\/p>\n

    Dancing and singing is inevitable for the Yao Minority when they celebrate their festivals. Night fa lls, everybody put on his best clothes and many beat long-shaped drums, gatering under the moonlight. The gaohu plays the serene and delicate theme, the melody is so beautiful that one could imagine a nice girl dancing gracefully. Then many other girls joined in, the melodic emotion is warming up.<\/p>

    The second part changes from d minor D major, 3\/4 beat, with the melody now melodic, now sprinting in rhythm, as if a pair of young lovers exchanging and dancing, expecting their promising future.<\/p>

    The third section reemerges the theme of the first part. Many other people join in the dancing file. They rejoice, swirl, sing songs, the atmo~phere getting warm, the emotions more heated. After the forceful tutti, the music reaches the climax before it ends.<\/p>

    This is originally a solo piece for Yunluo composed in I 964. It was later rearranged to be an orchestral piece, with Yunluo as the leading instrument.<\/p>

    The introduction shows a picture of the blue sky and clear water. The first movement describes the workers are busying around in the reservoir construction field. The slow tempo in the 2nd movement depicts the longing hopes of the workers. Then after a sery of Yunluo solo, the orchestra again plays lively paragraphs that show the water running down the reservoir. Finally the whole music ends with very happy and joyful mood under the brilliant sound of the drums.<\/p>

    The Great Wall Capriccio<\/strong> composed by LIU Wen-jin<\/p>

    In 1978, LIU Wen-jin visited United States with the China Arts Troupe. Inside the United Nation Building, he saw a huge wall carpet with a picture of the Great Wall inside. The grandness of the colourful Great wall aroused in LIU, a national pride and an urge to compose. Upon return to China, he stared composing and completed an erhu concerto: The Great Wall Capriccio in the spring of 1982. In May of that year, the concerto was premiered by MIN Hui-fen with the Shanghai Traditional Orchestra in the “Shanghai Spring Festival”. A first class award was given in the 1983 National Composition (Traditional Orchestra) Evaluation.<\/p>

    The Great Wall was a monumel)tal structure built by the ancient labourers. It is like a dragon dwelling on the Orient. It symbolizes the unity, strength, and wisdom Of the Chinese peoples. The composer, however, did not attempt to depict the magnificence of the physical structure. He chose a suite format and used the lyrical and expressive erhu in a concerto. It is more suitable for the traditional orchestra. The feelings and aspirations of climbing the Great Will become the contents in this capriccio.<\/p>

    There are four movements each with a subtitle. The third and fourth movements are played together without a rest in between. The composition is rich in traditional style but has a contemporary spirit. Characteristics of Chinese operas, erhu and qin music were adopted. The accompaniment by a western philharmonic orchestra gives additional breadth and dimension to the composition.<\/p>

    [1. Strolling Through the Mountain Pass] In a background of bells and crescendo triplets, the main theme emerges with breadth and greatness. The erhu solo follows with a deep and serene melody, like a poet strolling through the mountain pass with unsettling feeling, sometimes contemplating and sometimes appreciating.<\/p>

    [2. Beacon March] The theme has a rapid, dynamic, and strong rhythm. It gives a scene of beacon-fire and smokes filling the sky. The heroic and invoking tune of the, orchestra and the variations in the strength of the erhu melody express the fighting spirit and stamina of the Chinese people.<\/p>

    [3. Memorial for the Patriots] From a solemn, subtle, weeping, and narrative mood, the erhu solo gradually develops to become proud, emotional, and strong. The accompaniment varies as reverberation of ancient bells, the humming of a baritone, the calls of rivers and mountains, and increases the grayness of the atmosphere.<\/p>

    [4. Looking Afar] The erhu redisplays the theme of the first movement admist the imaginative and advancing background accompaniment of the orchestra. A dance melody follows and gives a feeling of openness. The ending rhythm has a penetrating and determined strength. The coda repeats the main theme and ends in widening and intense atmosphere.<\/p>

    This piece was composed in 1972 and premiered in 1977. Pipa was the solo and western orchestra was used. It was telling a story of two sisters, fighting against the storm to save their sheep. The main theme of this music was from a movie of the same title plus a nice Mongolian song.<\/p>

    This music is divided into 5 parts. By means of this real story, praised the unselfishness and heroic mood of the young generation.<\/p>

    [1st Part) Feeding the Sheep on the Grassland<\/p>

    The beginning melody showed the joyfulness of the sisters feeding the sheep on the grassland. Then the second melody described their love and praise of their country.<\/p>

    [2nd Part) Fight Against the Snowstorm<\/p>

    The main theme was played in various forms, depicting the terrible storm attacking the herd. The sisters struggled and tried their best effort to protect the sheep.<\/p>

    [3rd Part) Step Forward in the Cold Night<\/p>

    Though the situation was so bad, the sisters were so lonely and helpless, they stepped forward courageously without fear.<\/p>

    [4th Part) Memorising the Caring Love<\/p>

    The light of dawn finally came. Sound of the rescue troupe was heard. The second melody was played again to express the sisters’ love for the country.<\/p>

    [5th Part) Red Flowers Blossomed Everywhere<\/p>

    The main theme came again. This Mongolian feel melody brought the whole music to its brilliant ending.<\/p>

      This is a Zheng concerto composed for the “Asian Composers ‘ Conference” held in Hong Kong in 1981. The main melody was an extract from the Qin music “Lisao”.<\/p>

      Qu Yuan was a patriot and poet in ancient China. He was also a great politician. All his thoughts and ideals were reflected in his work “Lisao”. The composer of this music extracted the main melodies from the Qin version, made further development and arrangement of that, and finally completed this Zheng concerto and named it as “Fantasia of River Miluo”.<\/p>

      This piece was composed in 1952 and was the first sona concerto. It was awarded the second prize in the World Youth Celebration Festival in 1957. The original accompaniment is using western orchestra, then re-arranged by PIAO Dong-sheng and used Chinese orchestra. The techniques of sona in this piece was superb by that time.<\/p>

      The music is divided in three parts. Its melody is derived from folk music in Northeast China. It describes people celebrating happily in the National Day after the New China was born<\/p>

      [1st Part] With the beginning of a famous folk tune “Yang Ge”, sona brings out the main theme<\/p>

      that depicts a joyful and bright celebration.<\/p>

      [2nd Part] A beautiful and slow tune. also using the folk melodies. the suna sings out a deep and narrative story. Then after the cadenza, the whole orchestra enters the next movement.<\/p>

      2. Fishing at Sea: The cantabile theme is sometimes lively and sometimes lyrical, which conveys the delightful mood of the fishermen. The sharp sound of the wind instruments and the forceful answer from the orchestra depicts the scene of the fishermen puling the net. 3. Victory over the Storm: Imitated sounds of the stormy sea with a firm rhythmic pattern creates a frightening atmosphere against the simple but brave tune of the ishermen.
      4. Joyful Return: Melodies from the 1st section reappears with variations.
