It depicts the battle between the Chu and Han Kingdoms fought in 202 B.C.. The famous XIANG Yu of the Chu Kingdom was trapped by the ambush designed by General HAN Xin of the Han Kingdom. HAN Xin is from Huai Yin area, therefore the piece is also called Huai Yin Defeating Chu<\/em> (Huai Yin Ping Chu<\/em>).<\/p>

Originally named as San Liu<\/em> (San Luo in the Wu dialect). Three Variations of Plum blossom is a widely performed piece of the Silk and Bamboo repertoire of southern Yangtze River (Jiangnan Sizhu<\/em>). It was arranged by XIA Bao-sen for pipa solo. The term \u201cplum blossom\u201d refers to the five recurrences of a section, like the five petals of the flower. It is a joyous and lively piece, in the form of variations (not exactly three) with recurrences.<\/p>

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lang Tao Sha<\/em> is the title of a ci<\/em> (lyric poetry) melody. The literal meaning of the title is \u201cWaves Rinsing the Sand\u201d. The prefix \u201cda<\/em>\u201d (big or grand) may refer to its formal structure. This piece was performed by HUA Yan-jun who is also called Ah Bing the Blind. The source of Ah Bing\u2019s music has always been puzzling to scholars and musicians. Ah Bing himself claims that it is one of the set tunes (qupai<\/em>) from the Taoist ensemble music repertoire and he elaborates on it and turns it into a pipa piece. So far there is no Taoist piece which can be verified as being related to this piece. It may very well be Ah Bing\u2019s own composition. There are three sections : the first is rather soft and serene; the second is more involved which makes a contrast with the first; the third incorporates the melody of \u201cGeneral\u2019s Command\u201d (Jiang Jun Ning<\/em>, the suffix ning<\/em> may also refer to a form of ci<\/em> of shorter length, if it is so interpreted, the title could also be read as \u201cThe General\u201d) from the Shi Fan Lo Gu<\/em> (Variety of drums and gongs music) repertoire, using clear and strong rhythm.<\/p>
