中国音乐学院建院于一九六四年九月，由原北京艺术学院和中央音乐学院的部份科系合併组建而成。是一所专门培养民族音乐表演、创作、研究及教学的学府，初建时设民族乐器系、声乐系、歌剧系、理论系、作曲系、少数民族班，并设附属中学及中国音乐研究所，其后发展增收硕士研究生，又设有创作部和实验乐团。历任院长有安波、李凌、厉声、李西安……等等。
China Conservatory Founded in 1964. It was originally combined by the Beijing Arts School and some of the faculties of the Central Conservatory. It was specialised in the performing arts, composition, research and education in folk and traditional music. In the early years, there were the faculties of instrumental, vocal, opera, theory, composition etc., togehter with the secondary school and research institute. Later the master degree classes, creation department and the experimental orchestras were also established. Previous principals included LI Ling, LI Sheng, LI Xian etc.
