HOU Zuo-wu was born in 1910 in his ancestral home Yingshan County, Sichuan Province and he passed away of illness in early 1963 in Shanghai. He was fond of arts, especially in playing the qin and painting. In 1933, he graduated from the Art Academy of Shanghai and went abroad for further study in Japan. After coming back from abroad, he visited the qin players in Shanghai and got fame in playing his arrangement of High Mountains and Flowing Water. After the formation of the new China, he taught the qin in Central Conservatory, Shanghai Conservatory. Sichuan Conservatory.
