Jinan Progress Chinese Orchestra is a Chinese traditional instrumental ensemble. Its predecessor was the Shandong Military Region Cultural Troupe, established on May 4, 1949. In 1958, the original Beijing Public Security Army Cultural Troupe was transferred to the Jinan Military Region and merged with the Jinan Military Region Vanguard Song and Dance Troupe. The traditional orchestra became its subordinate unit and the only folk music group among all the professional military arts troupes in the entire army. The orchestra has participated in national and military-level performances and competitions, winning numerous awards and earning a high reputation both domestically and internationally.

The orchestra has always been committed to innovation and reform. As early as the 1950s, it pioneered the reform of traditional musical instruments. It has successively developed and improved over 20 excellent Chinese musical instruments, such as the high-pitched liuqin, keyed alto and bass suona, jinzhong, yunluo, lusheng datong, middle-pitched banhu, dual qianjin erhu and banhu, zhuierhu, dihu, multi-pipe multi-reed sheng, bawusheng, basin-shaped tuned drum, dayinggu, “2L-1 type” wide-range flute with throat pipe, and more. These innovations have brought about a qualitative leap in the instrument combination, tone, and performance capabilities of Chinese traditional orchestras. The orchestra has also nurtured a group of influential performers.

Prominent conductors who have served the orchestra include DONG Hong-de, ZHANG Shi-ye, and WANG Hui-ran. The main members of the orchestra include HU Tian-quan (sheng, suona), WANG Hong-yi (liuqin), SU An-guo (erhu), WANG Tian-li (erhu), LIU Feng-shan (flute, xun), DUAN Xue-li (suona), LIU Han-lin (percussion), ZHANG Da-hua (percussion), GUO Hong-lian (zheng), LIU Fang-bao (zhuixun, erhu), WU Yong-ping (zhuixun, erhu), and more. Over the years, the orchestra has created and performed a number of outstanding traditional instrumental ensemble and solo pieces, such as “Rising Sun in the East”, “Eternal Victory”, “Welcoming Loved Ones”, “Phoenix Spreading Its Wings”, “Big Brother of the Red Army Returns”, “Spring Arrives at Yi River”, “Dance of the Yi People”, “Warrior’s Spirit”, “Proud Shandong”, “A Flower”, “Camellia Narrative”, wind and percussion ensemble “Great Victory”, and “Qin Wang Breaking the Formation Music”, among others. These performances have been widely acclaimed by audiences at home and abroad and have made historic contributions to the development of Chinese traditional orchestral art.
